But let’s be honest, when does anything game-related in 2018 stay a secret? Here we discuss everything we know so far about Metal Gear Survive including its release date, platforms, pre-orders and gameplay. If you want to find out more, why not check out our Metal Gear Survive review?
When will Metal Gear Survive be released?
Despite being announced back in 2016, the official Metal Gear Survive release date wasn’t revealed until October 2017. While Konami initially confirmed that the game would be available at some point in 2017, the company confirmed to Polygon at E3 2017 that the game’s release had been pushed back until early 2018. Considering it’s the company’s first shot at a Metal Gear game without the legendary Hideo Kojima behind the wheel, extra time can only mean a better end product. Following the announcement, Konami confirmed that Metal Gear Survive would be available in the UK (and the rest of Europe) today, 22 February 2018, two days after the US release.
Which platforms isMetal Gear Survive available on?
Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Survive is available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, but not Nintendo’s underpowered mobile console, the Switch. Along with basic PS4 and Xbox One support, the game also features support for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
Where can I buy Metal Gear Survive?
Similarly, those interested can pick the game on PS4 and Xbox One from GAME at £29.99 each.
Metal Gear Survive storyline and gameplay
While it’s not ridiculous to imagine that Metal Gear Survive carries on from the events from the last Metal Gear game (The Phantom Pain), that’s not the case. Instead, Metal Gear Survive is said to take place in an alternate timeline set after the events of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, the prequel to the hugely popular 2015 game.
The idea behind the game? It’s a spin-off about Mother Base soldiers that have been transported through a wormhole into a bizarre alternate world. It’s Metal Gear in design, from the mechanics to the look and feel, but with some (obvious) differences. The game is best described as a survival action game with a “dense single-player mode” in which players embark on a mysterious adventure where weird (and deadly) zombie-like creatures with red crystal heads roam the land. Of course, there isn’t only one type of ‘zombie’ in Survive. There is said to be a range of zombies, all with unique strengths and weaknesses (we’ve seen one with a large metallic head that’s completely bullet-proof!) which forces the player to figure out how to take them down, or use the Metal Gear stealth mechanics and sneak past unnoticed. The game is based around three principles: building, crafting and resources. In this respect, the game is similar to other open-world survival games like Ark: Survival Evolved and Rust, where you’ll have to keep an eye on food and hunger levels. You’ll also have to craft upgrades, equipment and base upgrades to protect Base Camp against the variety of zombie-esque creatures present in the game. But trying to survive in an alternate timeline by yourself sounds lonely, right? That’s why there’s also a co-operative multiplayer mode where players work together using stealth, weaponry and gear to explore the wastelands and fight off waves of monsters. The map is based upon the Afghanistan map in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, although with a number of cosmetic changes like rearranged foliage and new chest-high walls to make the difference more apparent.
